Summer School in Finland and Sweden May 12 -- May 19, 2008
Theme: Beyond Bergman and Nobel: Scandinavian cultural policy and performing arts.
We held our annual summer school in Åbo/Turku Finland, and Stockholm Sweden in conjunction with NUROPE.
Sunday, May 11
- Discussion about Nomadic Projects (for early arrivals at (Gallery Titanik)
- Traveled most of the day on the Baltic Sea from Stockholm, Sweden
- Dinner at the working studio of Finnish artist Hanna Varris with a print making demonstration alongside members of NUROPE.

Saturday, May 17
Morning Activities:
- Toured Gamla Stan, the old town of Stockholm, with Prof. Pierre Guillet de Monthoux. Students introduced to some interesting and historically significant statures such as one of Gustav III, the famous king that favored the arts, and statue of Napoleon I.
- Presentation on managerial model, “Biological Management,” by CEO of Junibacken, Thomas Lundqvist. After lecture, toured Junibacken, a children’s museum, inspired by stories written by Astrid Lindgren, author of numerous children’s books; the museum also included themes from other children’s literature.
- Visited Vasa Museum. Houses Vasa—the sunken warship of Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus.
Afternoon Activities:
- Royal College of Art and Design global and Swedish debate.
- Konstfack Forum on Creativity 2008. Does Creativity Beat Strategy or Strategy Beat the Creative Industry? An open panel discussion moderated by Alice Rawsthorn, design critic for International Herald Tribune. Ms. Rawsthorn will address Forum 2008 questions of interest to the design industry leaders.
