The Arts Management Program uses the Martha Jackson and the UB Anderson Gallery for the teaching of many of its classes:
The UB Anderson Gallery is one of two art
galleries owned and managed by the University at Buffalo, which received the generous gift of the Anderson Gallery from David K. Anderson, son of the native Buffalonian and New-York City gallerist Martha Jackson (1907–1969). David K. Anderson's gift comprises more than 1,200 works of art and his mother’s extensive archives.
Martha Jackson was a passionate collector and champion of Abstract Expressionists and 20th century American artists. Her groundbreaking and continuous contributions to the field of collecting were based on a primary commitment to sharing the vision of contemporary artists with the public.
Martha Jackson’s important contributions include: Purchasing and exhibiting De Kooning’s entire second Woman series. Instrumental in bringing women artists including Barbara Hepworth, Grace Hartigan, and Louise Nevelson to the fore when it was difficult for women to find representation in the art world. Pioneering exhibits that included:
New forms-New Media I & II (1960):A look at the New Forms catalog, with essays by Lawrence Alloway and Allan Kaprow, shows that the exhibit featured a large and impressive selection of work by artists including Jasper Johns, Robert Indiana, John Chamberlain, Red Grooms, and May Wilson. Environments, Situations, Spaces (1961): First group show of environmental art
In January 2000, David Anderson gifted the commercial art gallery and a large part of his collection, including the Martha Jackson archives to the University at Buffalo. Itself a work of art, the building was intended from the start to be a showcase for Anderson’s large collection of a contemporary art as well as a commercial gallery.
It is appropriate that it now serves as the University at Buffalo’s museum. Home to the UB’s collection the UB Anderson Gallery provides an exciting environment for the exploration and study of art works and museum processes.
The UB Anderson Gallery plays an important role as a museum in the local community and larger art community.
Its significance lies in its link to the history of American art and all that connection represents.
The University at Buffalo, a large research university, converted the gallery to a state-of-the-art museum and renovated former office and storage spaces into spacious classrooms, a
prints and drawings study room, and a unique archive and research study center. Located within a quiet residential neighborhood in proximity to the University and downtown Buffalo, the UB Anderson Gallery is an academic center for museum studies which develops collaborative programs with the area’s diverse museums and rich cultural resources.
